What are the characteristics of social dance? – Difference Between Social Dance And Ballroom Dance

It can take many different forms. People dance in different ways depending on the circumstances. In the United Kingdom I have seen people who seem to dance in a very different way to the way in which dance was taught in school.

As a dancer I get involved with people. And when I started the book I got involved with two women who had very different dance careers. When I meet people they tell me something that I didn’t know, or sometimes just something from a different angle. I want to be very careful to do as much research as possible (not always for myself, sometimes I ask a friend) but always try to understand.

When people are not socialise with people around them, they start to lose their sense of belonging. The most obvious example seems to be the young generation of today, but with young people in education and the police, all the social change will happen. When people are not actively engaged in all the different activities surrounding them, they lose their sense of belonging. I enjoy doing this dance because it gives me a good sense of belonging to other people.

Do you dance because you just need to be social with other people, or do you do it because of a need to fit into a social group?

I don’t know. I can dance from a pure, spontaneous motivation, or I can just have fun and have fun with people – and then it’s not about being in a social
