A survey of more than 2,000 people in Britain reveals which foods make you face fat. There’s a lot of variety around here.
For every four people who do not eat any fat, there are four who eat some (although for most, there’s a lot of variety too). In Britain, fat means high-glycemic food like potatoes, bread, fried food and white potatoes with salt – or fat-containing foods like butter. But there are also the simple pleasures that fuel the UK economy: food and drink, leisure and recreation, food to eat with your mates after the weekend and food to give your little ones a slice as part of the Christmas shopping. And there are fat-loving Britons too. For every two people who think that fat is bad for you, there are three who do eat it.
Here are my ten favourites.
If you’re fat it must be for good reason. Tuna is rich in iodine – vital for the production of thyroid hormones and the production of fat-burning fat-burning enzymes in your liver, so it’s the perfect food for keeping the fat-fighting power of iodine in check.
It comes in two types, high iodine, or ‘good’ varieties such as tuna – high in iodine – and lower iodine, or ‘bad’ varieties such as salmon, with a bit of a ‘soda pop’ flavour.
Tuna contains a lot of water, so you need not worry about the iodine content but if you are concerned about iodine intake and are trying to stay in good health, you could take a capsule of iodine tablets.
Some things are good for you and healthy. The most obvious example is whole fruit, because it’s rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.
There are various other types of fruit and, though there are plenty of calories in them as well, many of them also contain vitamins such as vitamin C and calcium as well as fibre.
Fruit also contains many calories but this is not their main function – fruit is good for you because it’s rich in high-energy foods. Fizzy drinks and sugary sweets also boost blood sugar, which may be a reason why so many of us suffer from type 2 diabetes.
Fruit is also an excellent source of potassium, one of the electrolytes found in your blood – essential for everything from heart function to the production of growth hormone and testosterone in our bodies.
