You can open your decks, play, and draw a lot of cards. You can put lands as the draw. You can add mana as mana sources. You can find cards like fetch land and other lands that have various effects on your board and can make you mana. If you’re lucky, you could draw a copy of a card that allows you to cast a spell in response to a target creature you may have selected. Some cards have an ability called bounce to make a card untapable. This can also happen. You can even draw some cards that require your hand to have at least one card you can afford to give up. There are tons of things in the format that will change over time. When I first played this format I was overwhelmed. My opponent would get the kill, I would play my creatures, and he would take a few turns from my graveyard mana and then he would draw a bunch of cards as well. I was like, “What the hell is going on?”
So many new combinations to come to MTG.
This was going on for a very long time until my friend Alex Gagné started to brew a tournament. Alex was a long time pro player who had a deck in the same format that he was now playing. I don’t know what he was brewing but it worked. I didn’t know what it was until I saw this deck for the first time.
At first I was frustrated that some of the cards weren’t in the format yet. Then I realized that the decks I knew of were the best ones. They took a lot of mana to play. The new cards and the mana fixing they had got me where I wanted to go. By the time the format opened up I had a lot of cards from Alex Gagné.
By the end of the summer, I had several other people start playing at MTG and I was finally able to learn how to get into it, but in a format as large as the Modern format. I went from thinking about it because of the amount of cards I had sitting out at home in my deckbox to having a deck. And I was making the mistake of not learning how to use the cards. It was a mistake I still have trouble with.
And this was the mistake I made on my first deck. I didn’t understand how useful the cards in my list were. I thought that they were just good because that’s what all the cards that come with MTG have done. And I didn’t
