When light hits different types of energy cells, they all become the same. In each “cell” is a different energy, and the properties of this energy make the cell react differently:
For example, a solar cell contains: the light, the semiconductor, a material called silicon, a catalyst (which in turn is a chemical used for the reaction that allows the light to pass through), and finally a battery.
In other words, as the cell absorbs solar energy (the “light”), the semiconductor turns to silicon and an anode (which is the material used to store the charge) is formed. However, once the cell is charged, this process is reversed:
The anode and the light have been linked so that both can carry their own charge. This allows the semiconductor to react very quickly and the solar system to store a lot of energy.
There are also a few other important types of cells, which are what allow the technology to work:
A hybrid, which combines the efficiency and power of either traditional cells or solar panels
A “cones,” which are very narrow strips that are only 1/30th the length of a human hair (which are thinner than a human hair!)
And finally, there are “lasers” — the light from the sun that is used to charge a battery that stores the electricity, and that is then released once the battery is completely charged.
Can I make my own solar cells?
Mostly, not. If you are really interested in making your own solar cells, you would need to buy them.
There are some companies that produce cells using the same techniques used for solar panel technology, but these companies have taken on so much debt that they have failed. There are also companies that simply make batteries. If you really want to get into this, I have a guide about it.
What types of products can be made with solar cells?
For the most part, this depends on what kind of material you use. For example, some people prefer to make a solar cell in silicon, and use special chemicals to make the metal that is needed for an electrical connection to the cell. Others like to make a solar cell using more simple materials (metal, silicon, and other materials) for a much less expensive product. And still others like to make the cell using both materials.
