Illusions are defined as “beliefs, expectations, and interpretations, sometimes false, that are perceived as actual by the participants.”
How do they work in therapy?
In cognitive therapy, “revision or modification of the beliefs, expectations, or interpretations is viewed as a means of resolving the underlying distress.” A person with an imagination will frequently make up imaginary situations that she or he believes to be real. Cognitive therapy can help to “break the cycle of repetition” of false beliefs and feelings.
