It’s not true that people with weak tongues can’t express themselves well. So can we say how many children in a family?
We know that the average number of children one family has is roughly 4–5. However, our data is limited by the number of births to couples in their early thirties. In total only 4,000 babies have been born since 1970, so we do not know the exact numbers of people with poor or weak tongues (because most families do not have both parents with bad tongues).
One way of asking about tongue quality is to take a sample of 100 people and ask them about their tongue.
In terms of speech quality, it is clear that the average person with weak tongue does not know and cannot express all the possible words, but that people with strong words in their tongue do not need to ask a person with weak tongue for permission to use a word. We know that one’s vocabulary is the strongest predictor of speaking ability. In a recent study, we found that people with weaker tongues were more likely to use a short, simple command to ask a person with a strong tongue to use a particular word in their talk or to stop and read a longer description.
However, most people would be surprised to learn that a poor speaker, who uses a speech impediment, cannot say some words, which are very complex. That may be because of the fact that an impediment may have been introduced at a very early age (the child may have never reached the level of verbal function). In fact, even if the word does not need to be asked at a very early age, there may still be a strong link between tongue quality and the person’s speech ability until the person reaches the age of 15.
We use a scale to measure various things to help us explain a range of linguistic abilities and deficiencies. It takes into account a wide array of measures.
In the following sections, we will compare our scales to the scale we have traditionally used in research (a simple verbal test, “I have the mental capacity for comprehension of speech sounds”, and verbal IQ tests) and to language acquisition assessments in normal children (where it includes things such as reading and spelling proficiency).
The “I can speak” scale
At first glance, the “I can speak” scale seems to be a relatively straightforward and general measure of verbal ability. We know this is not the case.
