Where did it come from, how did it start – that’s the hard part of the story, isn’t it? You know, and I’ll give a little nod to people who have actually spent time around it like a lot people who have studied the genre and read the history and all that stuff and it’s interesting to realize how much of a mystery that is, and it takes an hour and a half to read it, and there’s an awful lot here that is inauthentic and the characters who seem to be from the future, the older characters as far as they’ve existed in the past are, they are from the future. And the younger writers are going through this big wave, and as the story moves forward, things seem to be going in a very weird direction, and it kind of is, but the stories are kind of good and I think it’s because we’re all in this weird little bubble at this point where it’s kind of a little bit mysterious, which is good and I think the characters are fantastic.
Is it weird when you write from that position, because it’s so different?
I don’t know. It seems sort of like it. You feel like, well, I’m writing from that angle, and I’ve actually sort of read some of the stuff that has been written with that, or at least it’s interesting enough, but it doesn’t seem like anyone else is. It was the way I got back into the writing thing. It always seemed that way to me, I really just fell back into that kind of, you know, a book I’ve read a hundred times and it’s good, and I just kind of go back to that kind of place and feel like I can actually write good, and the good people always seemed to show up, so I guess I just kind of felt more and more comfortable in my role of writer.
Can you ever be sure you know what’s best?
Maybe? But, you know, a lot of times at first you do read, and you’re like, “Oh, that’s the way it ought to be, that’s the way it ought to go,” and then in the process of rearing a newborn there are moments where I don’t like it anymore. I like how it kind of has some little warts that just seem so much less important than other things, and they happen over and over again, and it just feels like people were just writing because they liked writing the old way or they
