MC stands for “make me”. MC is probably the most often confused word when it comes to black artists writing music on the spot. At first you’ll just hear about MCs rapping for money, but in fact there is a greater use of MC in rap – it basically means “make me”.
What’s the problem?
The main problem with MC as it relates to rap is that many rappers use the word in a way that hurts others instead of helping them. In music a MC is a producer and they just play an instrument. A rapper, on the other hand, is a musical artist and they are able to take the words of other musicians and come up with new ideas. What is this new idea you’re talking about? You don’t want to sound like a rapper – don’t say “dick MC!” You don’t want to sound like a MC. You want to sound like a singer, a rapper, a music composer, a singer-songwriter or a songwriter. You want to sound like a creator or a creator of a new idea.
So, what’s the difference? It comes down to how you use the word MC.
How a Word Is Mastered
The word MC, as a word, is a hard word to use. There are three main stages when a word is used to master it.
The first stage is to create or find an origin. This is typically achieved in the classroom where the teacher/teacher’s aide asks students how words come to be and why some words are popular and why not others. The student says “That was the day I met MC”. The student says “I met MC because some kid said I was a dick MC.” The student says “I was told that I was a dick MC. I asked where I could get dick MC’s”. The student says “I met MC because some asshole said I was an idiot MC.” The student says “I met MC because I read an article talking about hip-hop saying people were a dick MC.” The student says “I met you dick MC.”
The second stage is to refine what you know. The teacher asks the student what word they came up with. Most times the student says he or she came up with the word. Most times the student says he or she got the word from some rap song. The question should be “Are you sure you came up with the word?”. And if the student says “I’m guessing because I was
