If you look at the songs I did with TLC and how the songs got produced I can’t say that it’s a genre or anything close to it. I have no idea what’s it’s going to be called. All I can say is it’s got something to do with some things.
You mentioned you are a fan of the N.W.A era. How did that all come about for you? What are your thoughts on the early days of the Straight Outta Compton?
That came about the same time I was making that record. At the time I was trying to make my record and TLC was coming out with their new album and she was doing interviews and I was always hearing all this stuff about N.W.A. It took something out of me. In the beginning it was just like every other rapper was saying N.W.A. made the biggest beats in the game and shit. The truth of the matter is, it was all hype, it was all publicity. Every N.W.A song was being played by all these radio stations on all these radio stations like all week they were on your radio station. I mean, it’s like that. There’s a lot of hype and a lot of pressure. Everyone’s trying to outdo each other, so you’re making all these beats to out-N.W.A. TLC was already doing a lot of good stuff and everything was getting hype and when it happened, it was like a flood. It was all hype and there was no reason for it to take off like it did.
The Compton album was something. It was something. You know when the N.W.A. album came out? That was really hard to make. Everybody wanted it because of the N.W.A. vibe and stuff, but that album wasn’t on there, man. At that time I was struggling and just trying to make a record and TLC was coming out with her new album with Chris Brown and she was a big star. I was a big star, too. I was really struggling and I went out there to shoot a music video a couple of months before the record was even finished. I had to make a song because everybody was shooting a video and it wasn’t finished, so I had to make that song. It was like a big deal. I worked
