I have come to realize that for all but the most hardcore of people, the phrase “I’m proud to be black” is not only a statement of identity but a statement of indifference.
I have come to realize that for all but the most hardcore of people, the phrase “I’m proud to be black” is not only a statement of identity but a statement of indifference. If you believe the word “tolerant” with its connotations of acceptance and respect, I’m an enemy of your very existence.
I’ve heard the idea expressed many times on campus that we don’t tolerate the idea of slavery in America. It’s such an absurd idea that it’s almost beyond belief. As an African-American, I know slavery exists and that it was an abhorrent institution. I had to study the slave trade so I could understand why blacks were not given equal rights to whites. I know that the U.S. was involved in several wars abroad to prevent the slave trade from continuing because there are still victims out there. Even now, in some cases, slavery still exists.
However, in order to understand the term “tolerant,” you have to do something other than assume the United States has no interest in the human rights of people. That assumption would imply that we have no interest in the lives and well-being of people who are born here. This assumption is absurd. If we have no interest in the lives and well-being of people of color, then we will never have any interest in their human rights. If we have no interest in the human rights of the lives of people of color, then we will never have any interest in their human human rights.
So, I’ve come to accept that my acceptance of what’s wrong with the term “tolerant” is only a statement of indifference. But what about when I say I’m proud to be black?

Proudness is a sign that you value everything that you’re proud of: your identity, your individuality, your ability, your talent, your uniqueness, your individuality, your talents, your uniqueness, or whatever you want – all of which will be defined by your identity as black. So it’s natural, then, for the term “tolerant” to be the most
