What can I use instead of Lightroom?

If you still have all the features you are used to, you can save time and money by opting for a professional RAW workflow. Lightroom 6 (the current version) still provides the basic features you’ve come to love, and you can download all the professional RAW photography tools in their own dedicated packages from Adobe. With professional RAW photography tools, like the ProRes File, Motion, etc., you have a complete collection to get you through your workflows. These packages are great for:

Photographers that want to do video

Photographers that want to manage their RAW files

Photographers that want to get into 4K and beyond

Photographers that want to edit videos at higher resolution at higher frame rates

Photographers who already own a lot of lenses and equipment

In addition, if you want to do more than just image editing, you’ll see that professional RAW editing is a must-have tool. In Lightroom 6, you can do high dynamic range (HDR) image manipulation (the HSL process uses an algorithm to create images with better colors and shadows), as well as create color grading files for videos and other projects. This is just one example of the many different ways you can use professional RAW editing to make your work more interesting, and more powerful.

What should I start doing now?

As we have mentioned, Lightroom is a fantastic collection of tools for creative photographers. However, as we discussed earlier, there are plenty of other great tools that complement Lightroom to give you the best of both worlds.

Take some time to look at some other, free tools (for both creative and technical work) that we recommend. Some examples to consider include:

The PhotoRise app, available for both Windows and Mac, allows you to save images to a USB-connected cloud storage system, like Google Drive, and import them into Photoshop with one click. This powerful Photoshop editing tool is ideal if you are looking to transform your photos into a more professional image.

The Lightroom mobile app gives you everything you need to capture, organize, and edit your images as you need. It is also great for creative and technical editing as well.
