I’ve been asked this question several times, and each time I say I can’t help you. I think it’s important to be able to determine what is best for you, but I also think it’s important to know that the answers you receive will not always be the right ones.
A lot of people will start with the idea of practicing five times a day, five times a week, and will then add other hours to the total over the course of weeks or months. The most effective practice schedule is one you can live off of. There are certain benefits to playing on weekends or days when you don’t have a full-time job. The key to all of this is to set aside a time to do each practice. I always suggest playing the music each day from the start, and try to add as many hours as possible over the course of a week.
If you work full time, then the amount of time devoted to practicing each day may only be half a day. However, if you get paid monthly, there will be no problem with keeping your hours so that you don’t have some day off in between all of your gigs.
If you do work full time, you may find that the hours of a week you are spending practicing go down a bit, but for the most part, the number of hours you play, or the number of hours per day that you play that day, will not decrease. You need to be clear on what your number is as far as number of hours per week and total amount of time you spend practicing. The amount of practice per week will determine the amount of time you need in a week per day.
I’ve heard that if you practice ten hours on Monday and Wednesday, you will get around three hours of sleep on a Friday and a Saturday! When you start using that logic, you start thinking you play ten hours a day, or play the entire day at least five times. However, that approach does not reflect how music really works. If you make ten hours practice on Mondays, it still does not mean you are playing ten hours a day. You are actually still at an hour a day or less because you aren’t putting into practice the kind of hard exercises you have been studying all day. If you keep your focus on learning songs, and not on trying to reach a hundredth and fiftyth note at the same time, and really stay focused on learning music, you are more likely to make more practice time than if you try to play for
