No. Not really. There’s just so much more to it. It took me a while, but I’ve gotten better.
Were you a big fan of jazz growing up?
At times, sure. I played and studied for 10 years in Chicago when I was in high school, so I’m not completely ignorant on jazz, but I was not really influenced at all by all of it. I listened to a lot of rock and even some blues, but jazz was something else for me. I like to say that I’m more of an old-school jazz fan.
You’re from Cleveland, but now you live a lot closer to home. Do you think there’s any influence of the city on the sound of your music?
No, because Cleveland is the city I’m from, and I had the greatest time in Cleveland on three levels, and the only two were music and baseball. I’m from the Midwest, so I grew up with this huge, loud, beautiful stadium, and I grew up being a Cleveland sports fan. Cleveland is definitely a big influence on my music. A lot of the time, I don’t even know where to begin with a song. Maybe it’s some old Cleveland songs, or just the feeling of hearing a stadium in Cleveland. That stadium is big and loud. And baseball, too.
Who were some of the local artists you worked out with at the Cleveland Metroparks Community Garden to help introduce your music to the public?
I’ve been doing that thing with bands in that place where I help people with a song when they’re there. But I don’t have the lyrics to my new album that he helped write. I’m pretty much just playing the song to him, but I haven’t put them online yet. He did a good job.
If you had the opportunity to play any of the Cleveland Metroparks, which would you choose? If possible, which one?
I’m sure some are very special events, but I would have to say the Community Garden. Everyone says what a beautiful green space it is. It was always such a great place to jam up there and practice.
Can you give me some hints about what your next project is going to be?
You may be able to see some video footage from the tour soon. You can definitely check out some new tracks from the album on Soundcloud. They’re called “The One-two Punch,” and they’re just very light
