I’ll never know. The music itself doesn’t bother me. The only thing about being in a band is that you get to be in a bunch of different situations. But we have an incredible group of people. What we play does nothing to hurt our ability. We’re just trying to do what we love. It’s not a job. It’s a hobby.
Are you going crazy watching the game and watching people sing in the stands?
I don’t know how to answer that. I like to watch things with my eyes and read a lot. But I do have my favorite game time in the world—watching the World Series between the Boston Red Sox and the San Francisco Giants. It’s fun to be at home watching the Sox and have a beer with the guys, but I can’t watch it when everyone is singing so loudly on the street.
You’re playing with John Mayer this week. Who was that?
Mayer is unbelievable, man. I’ve done it before, but the first two times we played, this guy is the best. He was such a cool kid, and then you realize that he can sing too. He’s a real artist for sure. I wish I could do that. I don’t want to lose anything. As important as musicians are when they grow, they’re so important when they become fathers or husbands or sons, or whatever. They’re so great. You have to do that.
You also have a new solo record coming out. Tell us about it.
I had to get back into the studio to take care of some more stuff. I don’t believe in any sort of long jams. All I want is to get out, play, listen, make sure everything sounds OK, and come back. You feel like you’re in a big band when you’re taking time. Maybe I just need a break. If I want to try something new and it doesn’t work out, I can go back and make that thing sound better.
What made you want to make a solo record?
I wanted to get back into solo rock, and that’s what came out. I like the idea of taking some time to try and experiment and see if something new works. I just felt comfortable with the band and that we were really good and we had a bunch of different people in it—so I felt like I could take time and do it.
